Tears of Joy - My Favourite Wedding Photos

In this new blog series called My Favourite Wedding Photos, I’ll be talking about some of my favourite wedding photos - why I love them, how I took them and explore how they show my style and approach of wedding photography.

As you may have noticed, I go about things slightly different to most photographers. I don’t make my couples spend hours away from their wedding doing endless couple and group photos. Instead, I let them get on with having a fantastic time while I focus on capturing beautiful moments that are actually happening without any intervention from me.

As my hero Cartier Bresson said, photography is all about capturing “the decisive moment”. That is what I’m always looking for as a documentary photographer.

Add these little moments together and you get the story of a wedding that the couple can re-live through their photos for years to come.

Moments like this one from Alex & Jonathan’s wedding last year. As with all weddings, it was a day packed full of emotions and not just from the bride and groom. For instance, what is going on in the corner of the church during a ceremony can often be as interesting as what is going on up at the alter.

I noticed from across the church that the bridesmaids were in floods of (happy!) tears after the vows. I wanted to capture their reactions for the bride so she could see how they were all sharing a special moment together.

In this instance, I waited until they collectively realised that they were all, without exception, crying and took the shot.

It’s a moment that showed the strong bonds that existed between the bride and her best friends. It’s a moment that the bride will be able to treasure for years to come.
