Last summer I was back at Kew Gardens in London shooting the wedding photography for Oli and Freddie.
Kew Gardens is a truly special venue to get married, especially in the summer months. Beautiful flowers and manicured lawns stretch out as far as the eye can see. It certainly offers all kinds of opportunities for candid, unposed images - and that’s what documentary wedding photography is all about. Nothing posed, nothing staged - just photos that tell the story of the wedding as it actually happened. You can read more about my style of photography here.
There was something really special about Oli and Freddie’s wedding day. It was packed with emotion - laughter, joy, tears, celebration and even flash-mob singing at the ceremony! It was clear to me just how overjoyed their friends and family were for newlyweds and I think this shines through in these images.
The day started off in the pub around the corner where the core members of the wedding party met for a quick drink with the excited and slightly nervous couple before they walked across to the ceremony in the grounds.
The ceremony in the Nash Conservatory was a lot of fun with lots of surprises thrown in. Freddie works in musical theatre so there plenty of music performed by his friends throughout including a solo while they walked down the aisle, a duet and the flash-mob. By the end, everyone in the room (including me) had massive grins on their face!
Drinks were served on Banks Lawn out in the grounds. It was a beautiful day in late summer so the sun bathed the entire proceedings in a warm, yellow glow. Drinks were drunk, laughs rang around the lawn, there was a lot of hugging and just a few (happy) tears!
As the sun began to set, Oli and Freddie were whisked away on a gulf buggy to the lake for a walk across Sacklers Crossing, their favourite part of Kew Gardens.
At dinner, there were lots of funny and moving speeches that charted Oli and Freddie’s path from children to newlyweds before we all headed to the dance floor for a good dance. And what a wedding band! These guys were really something. They kept the dance-floor completely full for hours (no mean feat!) culminating with the brass section leaping off the stage to serenade the partying guests. A remarkable end to a remarkable day.
As you can probably tell, I really loved Oli and Freddie’s wedding. I hope you enjoy looking through the photos as much as I did taking them.
